Affandi. Asian Van Gogh?

The following sites provide a holistic view on Affandi's development and language, which led many to compare his art style to Van Gogh's. The resources on this artist could be used as a follow up of a lesson on Van Gogh or on its own. Students may find this Indonesian artist hard to fathom as his subjects tend to be rather political and his paintings, abstract. Nonetheless, a worthy artist to learn about.

Affandi Speaks (an interview): http://www.age.jp/~pranoto/bookenglish/003.htm

Wu Shuang presents a comparison of Affandi and Van Gogh. Though some of the points mentioned may be debatable, yet it provides some entry questions and relatively good overview of the 2 artists. http://boonscafe.com/wushuang/?p=64

Thursday

Nanami Cowdroy uses mainly B&W.

Cowdroy's official site: http://www.nthread.net/gallery.html
I like to think of her works along the line of Surrealism.
Enjoy.

Monday

Fashion Drawing + Templates.

There will always be the 'It' girl. She wants to flaunt her style sense for all to see.
She wants to be in the fashion world. This site could be a good one to start her off with.
There are also free templates available @:

Grids in Drawing for Accuracy.

Grids enable one to guage and draw more accurately.
Durer is one example who employed grids.
Chuck Close's portraits are excellent samples to motivate kids
to use grids outside of the usual domains of Math and Science.

Billybear.com may look kinda childish but the simple grid art
exercise would help to build kids' confidence in drawing : http://www.billybear4kids.com/Learn2Draw/Learn2Draw.html

Keith Haring and Public Responsibility.

This is a fun site for learning about Keith Haring: http://www.haringkids.com/

Vincent Van Gogh.

Lyrics of "Starry Starry Night" by Don Mclean (1972):

Starry, starry night.
Paint your palette blue and grey,
Look out on a summer's day,
With eyes that know the darkness in my soul.
Shadows on the hills,
Sketch the trees and the daffodils,
Catch the breeze and the winter chills,
In colors on the snowy linen land.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

Starry, starry night.
Flaming flowers that brightly blaze,
Swirling clouds in violet haze,
Reflect in Vincent's eyes of china blue.
Colors changing hue, morning fields of amber grain,
Weathered faces lined in pain,
Are soothed beneath the artist's loving hand.

Now I understand what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they did not know how.
Perhaps they'll listen now.

For they could not love you,
But still your love was true.
And when no hope was left in sight
On that starry, starry night,
You took your life, as lovers often do.
But I could have told you, Vincent,
This world was never meant for one
As beautiful as you.

Starry, starry night.
Portraits hung in empty halls,
Frameless head on nameless walls,
With eyes that watch the world and can't forget.
Like the strangers that you've met,
The ragged men in the ragged clothes,
The silver thorn of bloody rose,
Lie crushed and broken on the virgin snow.

Now I think I know what you tried to say to me,
How you suffered for your sanity,
How you tried to set them free.
They would not listen, they're not listening still.
Perhaps they never will...
